Where you live isn't one thing. Neither are you.

We didn't build still by asking "what makes a good neighborhood." We built it by asking a harder question: good for whom, in what way, on which dimension, at what time of day — and compared to what?

The answers are different for almost everyone. That's not a problem to be solved with a better index. It's the reason an index will always fall short.

Solitude and belonging aren't opposites.

"I need acoustic quiet and a dark sky. I don't need transit — I drive, and I want to drive as little as possible."
"I have a reactive dog. I need parks with enclosed sections. Leash laws that are enforced. Flat terrain. No foxtails."
"I'm soy-intolerant. I need actual grocery stores with ingredient transparency, not a walk-score that counts every bodega."
"I work remotely. Fast, reliable internet is a hard requirement. I'd rather live somewhere with more nature and less social infrastructure."
"I want to be part of a community. A farmers market within walking distance. Neighbors who have lived there for twenty years. A place with roots."

Some people are looking for a place where they can finally be quiet. Others are looking for a community they can actually be part of. Many are looking for both — and are willing to live somewhere that's strong on one if it's at least decent on the other.

We model this as a single spectrum, not two separate searches. You can dial toward quiet, isolated, dark, low-stimulation environments — places that prioritize acoustic refuge, clean air, and nature above social density. Or you can dial toward community: walkable third places, farmers markets, civic life, faith communities, trails people actually use together.

Most people land somewhere in between. The point is that you set the dial — not us, and not a market-average assumption about what people want.

For some people, the wrong environment isn't uncomfortable. It makes them unwell.

Research on sensory processing sensitivity — the trait that puts roughly one in six people at the higher end of environmental responsiveness — consistently shows that this group experiences environmental stressors not as inconvenience but as genuine physiological cost. Chronic noise exposure raises cardiovascular risk. Artificial light at night disrupts sleep architecture. Poor air quality correlates with higher rates of depression. Crowding without respite depletes cognitive function.

We're not saying this to be alarming. We're saying it because conventional search tools are built for the median, and the median isn't a person. If your health genuinely depends on acoustic refuge, or clean air, or dark skies, you deserve a tool that treats those dimensions as first-class criteria — not footnotes, not filters you have to hunt for, not absent entirely.

Still is built for people who know this about themselves. You already know. We just built the tool.

The place that's right for you isn't right for everyone. That's not a problem. It's the whole point.

An index averages. It takes a population of people with different needs, different sensitivities, and different definitions of a good life, and produces a single number that represents none of them exactly.

We don't do that.

A person with gluten sensitivity and a person who eats a strictly vegan diet are not the same person with the same needs — and neither is well-served by a "food access" score that counts grocery stores without asking what's in them. A dog owner who wants a park where their large, energetic dog can run off-leash is not looking for the same thing as a dog owner whose small dog is at risk from aggressive encounters, or from burrs, or from the summer grass that carries foxtails. A person who loves live music and values proximity to venues is making a choice that directly contradicts what someone who needs acoustic quiet needs — and both of them are right.

"Walkable" doesn't mean the same thing for someone who walks a mile a day and someone who uses a wheelchair. "Good transit" doesn't mean the same thing for a suburban commuter and someone traveling to a city center. "Low crime" as an aggregate tells you almost nothing about whether the specific street you'd live on, at the specific time of day you'd be there, is actually safe.

We don't resolve these differences by picking a winner. We resolve them by asking you — specifically, deliberately, with sliders and weights and criteria you set — what you need. And then we score places against your answer, not against someone else's.

The criteria that matter most to you are the criteria that score the place. Not a demographic average. Not a market assumption. Yours.

Where you can live has never been a neutral question.

The places that score well on acoustic quiet today didn't become quiet by accident. American zoning through the twentieth century was deliberate in ways that still shape the map. Industrial facilities were placed near communities that lacked the political power to object. Highways were routed through neighborhoods whose residents were not consulted. Flight paths were adjusted over areas where land was cheap precisely because of who lived there. The result is that noise, air pollution, and environmental burden are distributed unevenly — and that distribution follows the geography of historical exclusion with a consistency that is not coincidental.

We name this because it shapes what still finds. A search for quiet and clean air can — if you follow it without awareness — point toward places that are quiet and clean partly because they have always been protected by exclusion, whether formal or informal. Expensive. Homogeneous. Difficult to access for people who don't already have resources.

We are not going to pretend that's not true. And we're not going to fix it by adding a DEI disclaimer to our score. That would be its own kind of dishonesty.

What we can do — and what we do — is show you the history alongside the current score. The trajectory of a place includes its zoning history, its demographic change, its industrial past, and the decisions that shaped its physical environment. A neighborhood that is quiet now because it was always residential tells a different story than one that became quiet after decades of advocacy and remediation. A community with a 40-year-old farmers market has different roots than one with a new development that dropped one in to raise property values.

We show you the layers. The current score is one of them. The history is another. The planned future — what's approved, what's permitted, what's coming — is a third. We don't tell you what to make of them. We make sure you can see them.

And we'd add this: the diversity of what people need from a place is real and irreducible. A multigenerational immigrant community with deep roots in a neighborhood with average walk scores and older housing stock may be offering something a brand-new development with a perfect Livability rating cannot. Still doesn't rank communities. It ranks places against your criteria. Those are genuinely different things.

Where a place is going matters as much as where it is.

Most tools give you a snapshot. We give you a direction.

The road outside your candidate house carries 12,000 vehicles a day today. Three years ago it carried 8,000. In the regional transportation plan, it's slated for widening. That trajectory is a different story than a road that's been stable for a decade because the neighborhood fought a widening proposal and won.

In the current version of still — our prototype — we show you current conditions from the most authoritative sources we can access. In the next version, every score comes with a trend arrow: improving, stable, or watch. And in the version after that, we'll surface the planned-change layer: what's approved, what's permitted, what's in the pipeline for the parcels around the one you're considering.

We tell you this now because we think you should know what you're looking at. A prototype that's honest about being a prototype is more useful than one that isn't. The current data is real. The trend layer is coming.
